Used as a metal-chelating agent for the treatment of symptomatic and severe lead poisoning (chelation therapy); 

also employed to prevent calcium depletion in the body and as a pharmaceutical reference standard for analytical quality control.

Used as a chelating agent, preservative and antioxidant to sequester trace metal ions that catalyse oxidation; 

helps retain colour and flavour, and extends shelf life of food products.

Used as a chelating agent and stabiliser in cosmetic formulations to bind metal ions,
